It’s estimated that nearly 21 million Americans struggle with substance abuse issues, whether it’s for legal or controlled substances.

Substance abuse can have a devastating effect on your life, causing addictive behavior that makes it difficult to go to work, see your family, or enjoy a normal social life.

All is not lost – if you are struggling with substance abuse, we are here to help. Our Charleston Outpatient Rehab Center offers numerous forms of treatment, all of which are tailored to your personal needs. Whether you need group therapy, one-to-one counseling, or more drastic treatment, our specialist team is here to help.

Causes

There are many reasons that you might develop a substance abuse problem, such as:

  • Peer pressure
  • Mental health issues
  • Incorrect information on substances
  • Social issues or a lack of support
  • Childhood trauma
  • Being neglected
  • Poor circumstances or living situations
  • Genetic predisposition to addiction

It’s important to note that struggling with substance abuse doesn’t make you a bad person – many contributing factors may be out of your control or inevitable due to life circumstances at a particular time.

Signs

There are mental and physical signs of addiction which indicate substance abuse problem. These signs can include:

  • Irritability and aggression
  • Personality and habit changes
  • Depression and feeling lethargic
  • Mood swings
  • Crime (i.e. stealing, violence)
  • Bloodshot or overly dilated eyes
  • Sudden weight gains/losses
  • Sleep problems
  • Poor coordination
  • Hygiene problems

If you have these signs or you notice another person with some of these signs, they may be struggling with a substance abuse issue.

Substance Abuse
Effect on Brain

Substance abuse can have a devastating effect on your brain, damaging the neurotransmitters which transmit the hormones that regulate our mood, happiness, and ability to think clearly.

This can have devastating mental health effects which last for the rest of our lives. For example, more extreme substance abuse can cause damage to the brain’s dopamine system and even lead to “dopamine cell death”, so it becomes impossible to feel truly happy without taking a stimulant drug of some kind.

Substance Abuse Treatment

We offer a wide range of substance abuse treatments for substances such as cocaine, heroin, and much more. We offer both group therapy and one-to-one sessions for treating your substance abuse issues, providing treatment in the environment you’re most comfortable with.

Our team understands that no two patients are the same, so we tailor your recovery to meet your needs within your own personal timeframe. Ultimately, everyone’s substance abuse issues have unique causes and contributing factors that require specialized treatment.

Group
Therapy

While it might not be for everyone, many patients with substance abuse issues find that group therapy is a comforting environment where they can socialize with other people struggling with addiction. This is important because it helps patients to see that they are not alone in their struggles by identifying with other members of the group.

Group therapy sessions instill a sense of team spirit that helps many patients to collectively support one another through periods of stress, cravings, and withdrawal. Group settings tend to be very beneficial to a patient’s drive, wellbeing, and overall mental health.

One-to-One
Sessions

For some people struggling with substance abuse, one-to-one sessions are a brilliant form of treatment. These personal sessions are conducted with a highly trained specialist who can help you to unpack the issues, trauma, and circumstances that may have led to your substance abuse issues in the first place.

The goal of one-to-one sessions is to understand the root cause of your issues and work toward improvements based on that knowledge. These sessions can also help you with coping strategies for withdrawal, cravings, and other obstacles that may attempt to hinder your journey on the road to recovery.
