Determining the correct type of treatment after detox is a process that involves assessing your substance use history to provide comprehensive care.
Jump to a section
Detox is the process of purging substances from your system and clinically stabilizing your body. It is the first step in substance abuse recovery. It begins with assessment of your substance use, including what drugs are consumed, how often, and in what amounts. These factors determine not only how detox will be managed, but the next steps in your recovery journey.
Types of Recovery Programming
Addiction is classified as a public safety and health concern. Heavier substance use or the consumption of highly addictive substances such as heroin requires different interventions than some other substances. However, your unique needs will be assessed by medical professionals who will work with you to determine the best path forward post-detox. There are several levels of care in addiction recovery, and patients can step up or down through treatment as needed.
Inpatient Treatment
Inpatient rehab offers comprehensive 24/7 treatment for individuals. Sometimes referred to as residential treatment, this option provides a safe space for patients in recovery to live while they continue intensive daily treatment through individual and group therapies, as well as holistic modalities such as art therapy and equine therapy, all within a low-stress environment.
Individuals who undertake residential treatment practice identifying triggers and implementing coping skills in a carefully moderated setting. They can build the skills necessary for their next level of treatment, and before reentering the stresses of daily life.
Outpatient Treatment
During outpatient treatment, patients step down from 24/7 care, allowing them to gradually reenter work, home life, relationships, and other responsibilities while still practicing their developing coping skills. Different types of outpatient treatment include the following:
Partial Hospitalization Programming (PHP): PHPs offer a part-time on-site therapeutic model where patients engage in set daily activities for a specified period each day. These generally run from morning to afternoon, with afternoons and evenings free for patients to pursue home life or work. Generally, PHPs are structured to include individual therapy, creative expression, movement, and group skill work. Many offer at least one meal such as breakfast or lunch.
Intensive Outpatient Programming (IOP): During IOP, patients attend several individual and group therapy sessions over the course of each week. These often line up with part of ongoing PHP programming, which makes this option a natural step down in care that provides consistency for recovery.
Aftercare Options
There are multiple additional aftercare options for patients who have graduated residential, PHP, and/or IOP programming.
Sober Living Environments (SLE): Sober living homes can be peer-run, include one paid staff member who monitors the space, be supervised with certified staff, or offer clinical and administrative supervision with credentialed staff. The latter often run in conjunction with PHP programming, but SLEs are also a great option for transitioning into daily life while maintaining control over substance exposure by providing:
- dedicated time to practice living a sober lifestyle
- a safe and stable living environment
- positive personal and peer relationships
- a network of community resources
- evidence-based practices regarding medication and treatment
- the skills to maintain recovery
- employment and financial responsibility
Support Groups: There are numerous support groups, including 12-Step and SMART Recovery options. Many addiction treatment facilities provide ongoing access to these networks where individuals can meet in a judgment-free gathering to discuss elements of recovery. Support groups offer accountability and community, both of which are essential to maintaining sobriety.
Alumni Programs: Many addiction recovery facilities also offer alumni programming for those who have completed treatment. These programs create a network of sober support that is proven to increase recovery outcomes. An added benefit is the familiarity patients have with the faculty and community.
Why Do I Need Ongoing Care?
Continued care beyond detox greatly improves your chances of maintaining sobriety and achieving a healthy lifestyle. Research has shown that individuals who completed three months of care after detox in long-term residential and outpatient treatment experience significantly better outcomes, with a lower rate of illicit drug use and behavioral functioning improvements in several areas, including employment.
