Matthew Tobin
Primary Therapist
Matthew Tobin, MS, LPCA, is a Primary Therapist at Lantana Recovery in Connecticut. With seven years of behavioral health experience across adults, adolescents, children, and families, he holds a Master of Science in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from Southern Connecticut State University in New Haven and completed his undergraduate work at The New School in New York City.
Matthew's clinical philosophy is strongly relational and process-oriented. His work is integrative, drawing from Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Motivational Interviewing, Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), and trauma-informed care, applied according to what a client or group actually needs. His approach is person-centered and strengths-based, with an existential and spiritual thread running through it. In group work, he favors a Yalom-influenced style in which clients generate the content and he holds the container, allowing depth to emerge organically rather than being imposed.
Matthew came to this field after a career in journalism, where he was drawn to bearing witness to people's stories and the human conditions behind them. Working as a psychiatric technician on a locked hospital unit gave him direct exposure to crisis and recovery, and showed him how much change is possible when someone has the right relational support. His own experience navigating PTSD, depression, and anxiety, and learning the tools to manage them, shapes the hope he brings to this work. Outside of the office, he lifts weights, uses the sauna and cold plunge, reads widely, watches movies, and spends time with friends and family.
