Pre-Columbian Era

The area that is now Columbia was originally inhabited by various Native American tribes, including the Catawba, Congaree, and Cherokee. The first European settlers to arrive in the area were Spanish explorers, who gave the region its name (“Columbia” comes from Christopher Columbus).

The Founding of Columbia

Columbia was officially founded in 1786 as part of the South Carolina State Legislature’s plan to create a centrally located capital city. The city was designed by surveyor Benjamin Lyttleton and named after Christopher Columbus.

The Civil War and Reconstruction

During the Civil War, Columbia was occupied by Union troops in February 1865. In April of that same year, however, Confederate troops recaptured the city and burned a large portion of it to the ground. Following the war, Columbia underwent a period of reconstruction.

20th Century Columbia, SC

In the early 20th century, Columbia continued to grow rapidly. By the mid-20th century, however, racial tensions were high and race riots broke out in 1967. These riots resulted in significant damage to black-owned businesses in downtown Columbia. In recent years, Columbia has experienced something of a renaissance, with a growing economy and revitalized downtown area.
