Regaining Financial Responsibility in Recovery

Jump to Section

One major aspect of addiction is how it negatively affects one’s financial situation and stability. In fact, many people who struggle with active addiction end up hitting a financial bottom where they lose all of their assets. The good news is there are many ways to regain financial responsibility in recovery and start to reverse all of the negative financial harm that one has incurred.

Regaining Responsibility in Recovery

Of course, financial responsibility is not the only type of responsibility that must be gained in recovery. In fact, financial responsibility in recovery should never be the primary motivator for one’s success. Yes, it is important, but it is not as important as one’s physical, mental, and emotional health.

Some of the most important responsibilities that one faces in early recovery are relatively simple. These are responsibilities like ensuring that one takes care of their health by making appropriate hygiene and fitness choices. Another responsibility is taking care of one’s diet and sleep cycles.

A major responsibility for people in recovery is their family duties. Depending on the situation, this may be one’s responsibility as a child, as a parent, or as a partner. This responsibility also involves a lot of trust which can be gained via commitment to one’s long-term treatment plan like continuing to go to therapy and attending 12-Step recovery meetings.

Regaining Financial Responsibility in Recovery

The fact of the matter is that there are many happy and content people in recovery who never regained the financial success that they had in sobriety. This happiness comes from understanding that material possessions pale in comparison to the physical and emotional stability of oneself and their loved ones.

However, just because one does not regain the financial successes they once had does not mean that they should not regain a sense of financial responsibility. These responsibilities include getting honest employment, engaging in responsible spending, and paying back any debts that they may have incurred while in active addiction. 12-Step recovery can help with this.

Utilizing 12-Step Recovery for Regaining Responsibility in Recovery

12-Step recovery is about much more than simply putting down the drink or the drug. This is why many people say that addiction is “more about the thinking than it is about the drinking.”

No, 12-Step recovery is about following a new design for living. It is also about righting the wrongs of the past while also realizing that one can never change what has already happened. This includes what already happened financially. However, the Twelve Steps of 12-Step recovery can help rectify some of those past misdeeds, especially financial ones.

Much financial responsibility in recovery comes with utilizing the Ninth Step of 12-Step recovery. The Ninth Step is also known as the “amends step” because this is where one starts to literally right their wrongs by offering to make up for prior negative behaviors. Financially, this may mean paying back creditors and agreeing to conduct themselves more ethically in business.

Utilizing Many Effective Means, Methods, and Modalities for Recovery

Of course, financial responsibility in recovery does not just happen by itself. It comes from engaging in effective recovery means, methods, and modalities. These are modalities that come from all areas of recovery including the world of psychotherapy, experiential therapy, and holistic healing methods.

Psychotherapies like cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) and dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) can be highly effective because they work to get to the underlying issues of addiction that often are the reason one drinks and uses in the first place. CBT and DBT are also highly effective because they make individuals an active participant in their recovery and allow them to change the negative way they view themselves and the world around them.

Experiential therapies like nature-immersion therapy can also be highly effective because they help an individual connect to themselves by better connecting to nature. There are also creative experiential therapies like art therapy that allow one to heal via the creative process.

Lastly one can utilize yoga and meditation to better find a sense of serenity and center themselves while in recovery. These holistic healing methods can also be highly effective because they can basically go anywhere the individual goes. They are highly accessible.
