Learning Organization in Outpatient Treatment

Jump to Section

Many people don’t realize that addiction (and co-occurring addiction and mental illness) recovery is a lifelong journey. It is not some type of “one and done” situation. This is why it is important to learn the critical lifelong skills that are important for long-term success. This includes learning organization in outpatient treatment.

Better Understanding Addiction

Before delving into outpatient treatment, it is important to understand a little bit more about the dynamics that may lead one to engage with it. Yes, this means discussing addiction. Millions of people struggle with addiction every day, and unfortunately, many of those people with never get the help that they need.

One of the reasons for this is that many people are afraid to ask for help because of the stigma that surrounds addiction. This is because there are still many people who believe that addiction is some type of moral failing or “choice.” This is simply untrue, and this is the type of thinking that can be very dangerous.

Addiction is not a “choice,” it is a disease. It is a disease like many other chronic diseases, such as cancer, heart disease, and diabetes. This is because these are the types of diseases that will almost always get worse without some type of professional intervention, such as addiction recovery.

Better Understanding Addiction Recovery

Addiction recovery is all about addressing addiction holistically. At least, that is what effective addiction recovery should look like. Unfortunately, there are many recovery centers that only offer overarching “one-note” recovery plans that don’t focus on individual clients.

Here at Lantana Recovery, we know that this type of “one-size-fits-all” recovery plan rarely works. That is why we focus on individualized recovery, which may include outpatient treatment. However, before we can even begin to help, it is important to know the signs and symptoms of addiction, so one can first connect with us.

The Signs and Symptoms of Addiction

The following are the signs and symptoms of addiction, so you can better help yourself or a loved one if you feel that they have a problem. If any, many, or all of these signs are present, it can be helpful to reach out to professional help as soon as possible:

  • Isolating away from family and close friends
  • Loss of appetite and a lack of care regarding physical appearance and well-being
  • Experiencing trouble at work or school
  • Exhibiting excessive mood swings
  • Feeling anxious, nervous, or overly “stressed out”
  • Not being able to stop once starting to drink or use
  • Losing interest in activities once enjoyed
  • Having trouble with sleep cycles, including sleeping too much and not sleeping enough
  • Experiencing physical ailments such as headaches, body aches, and gastrointestinal problems
  • Having feelings of worthlessness, hopelessness, and helplessness
  • Causing harm to oneself or others
  • Having suicidal ideations

Now, as one can see, these signs and symptoms are significant and can even be deadly. This is why reaching out for professional help sooner rather than later is critical. Doing so could mean the difference between short-term side effects and long-term consequences. It could also mean getting them the outpatient treatment that they need right away.

Better Understanding Outpatient Treatment

Outpatient treatment is a recovery plan that does not require one to stay in a residential facility. However, this does not mean that it will be any less intensive.

Outpatient treatment often involves eight hours of work for five days a week, while one is in early recovery. This may taper down as the program progresses. It also often involves engaging in therapies and attending some type of recovery meeting regularly. Outpatient treatment may require regular alcohol and drug testing as well to ensure that you are sticking to the program.

Learning Organization in Outpatient Treatment

Outpatient treatment is also very important because it teaches essential life skills that are critical if one is going to maintain a healthy, long-term recovery. These life skills include organization.

Life can get very messy in active addiction. All focus on staying organized can go out the window because the only thing that matters is getting that next drink or drug. This is often why people lose their jobs or drop out of school while in active addiction.

The good news is that organization is often prioritized in outpatient treatment. This begins with creating a manageable daily schedule and sticking to it. It also includes setting goals and working toward them in a healthy and orderly fashion. This is how long-term recovery can ultimately manifest.
